Due to increasing demand, Delta Air Lines needed to expand JFK Terminal 4 including nine (9) new gates. PSSI was chosen as the Civil General Contractor to update utilities and pavement with minimal disruption to ongoing airport operations. The scope of the project called for demolition of approximately 1.5 million square feet of existing asphalt and concrete pavement. Soil excavation and removal from site was performed to a variety of specified depths in order to prepare the site for new construction. Full depth replacement & milling operations were implemented.

New positive drainage installed included structures, piping and water quality treatment devices. The new sanitary system installation included pre-cast concrete structures, a lift station, force main and gravity based piping. New structures and piping were set in place and tied into existing systems, while also adjusting existing structures to grade as necessary. New water main and hydrant fueling systems were put in around the perimeter of the new building. Electrical duct bank, including 5 kV lines, was installed, along with various communications and emergency duct banks.

Placement and careful grading of new PCC and asphalt pavement sections followed. All pavement sections met the standards of PANYNJ and FAA. Pavement was then striped according to specific coordinates given. GPS survey technology in conjunction with AutoCAD drawings containing geospatial coordinate data were utilized to accurately perform all horizontal and vertical layout.

Construction of Taxilane “HB” fell under the scope of this project as well. 100,000 square feet of concrete panels were installed allowing for planes to travel to and from T4 gates and existing taxiways. Lighting, aeronautical signage and striping according to the standards of PANYNJ & FAA were installed. In addition, the scope for Taxilanes “Alpha” and “Bravo” consisted of pavement installation, adjustment of lighting, aeronautical signage erection and striping.
